How to test a Replit app before launch: a practical checklist

This guide is for people who built an app with Replit Agent and want to share it with real users: solo creators, freelancers and small teams. Apps built by chatting usually work on the happy path. What tends to break is everything around it: a page that only loads when you are signed in as the owner, a form with no error message, a phone layout that overflows, a missing page title, a link that points to the development address.

You will get a way of thinking about what Replit already checks for you, a numbered pre-launch test plan, and a way to get an outside view with a read-only test. It is one of a series for AI app builders, see the hub: AI app builders: how to test before launch.

How a Replit app goes live

According to Replit's documentation, publishing creates a production deployment: a stable, shareable version of your app that runs at its own URL, separate from the project you keep editing. Replit offers several deployment types: Autoscale, Reserved VM, Static and Scheduled. The preview URL is described as temporary and intended for development, not as the link to hand out. You can keep editing without changing the live app until you select Republish, which updates the same URL.

Practical consequence: the thing your visitors see is the published version. Test that one, not the preview.

What Replit's own testing does well

Replit documents that Agent tests its own work on a regular basis, and offers an App testing option under Advanced settings, described as "Agent tests your app automatically" (not available in Lite mode). Agent also creates checkpoints, so you can roll back to an earlier state, and you can describe a problem in chat for Agent to fix. After publishing, Replit's Monitoring view shows requests, HTTP status codes, response durations, and CPU and memory use.

This is useful, and it is the right first line. It works from inside your project, with knowledge of how the app was built.

Where problems usually hide

Pre-launch test plan for a Replit app

  1. Publish, then open the published URL in a private window. Do not use the preview address.
  2. Check that every page of the main journey loads without being signed in, or redirects cleanly to sign-in.
  3. Test sign-up and sign-in with a fresh test account, not your owner account.
  4. Test sign-out, then try to open a signed-in page by its address directly.
  5. Submit each form with valid data, empty data and clearly wrong data. Read the messages.
  6. Click every link and button in the header, footer and main journey. Look for dead links and development addresses.
  7. Open the app on a real phone and on a narrow desktop window. Check text size, overlaps and tap targets.
  8. Navigate the main journey with the keyboard only. Can you always see where focus is?
  9. Check page titles, headings and image descriptions on the main pages.
  10. Check that no secret, key or internal address appears in the page source or in visible error text.
  11. Open Monitoring after a few visits and look for error status codes or slow responses.
  12. Make a change, Republish, and re-run steps 1 to 5 to confirm the update behaves like the first version.

What an independent test adds

A test run by the same tool that wrote the app shares its blind spots. An independent test comes from outside: it does not see your code or your project, it opens the published address like a visitor, and it reports what it saw. It is a second pair of eyes, not a substitute for your own judgement.

Test your Replit app with Avalyz

Avalyz tests a web app from the outside, in real browsers, and is read-only by default: nothing is created or changed on your app.

Avalyz proves what it saw. It does not promise the rest, and it does not replace your own review. See also how to test a Bolt app, how to test a Lovable app and how to test a vibe-coded app.

FAQ

Should I test the preview or the published app?

Test the published URL. Replit describes the preview URL as temporary and for development, and your visitors use the published one.

Does Replit test my app for me?

Replit documents that Agent tests its own work and has an App testing option under Advanced settings. It is a good start. An outside check adds a view that does not depend on how the app was built.

Can an AI test an app built by an AI?

Yes, if it is a different one. Avalyz is independent from the AI that wrote your app and does not see your code.

Will the test change my data?

Not by default. By default, the test reads pages and submits no form except sign-in with the test account you provide.

Do I need to re-test after each Republish?

Yes. Republishing updates the live URL, so run the checks again, by hand or by link.
